How long are the lines at the Acropolis?

Entry is by timed slot, introduced partly to stop the crush caused by cruise-ship groups. With a ticket, the waits are at the entrance gate and on the narrow path up through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway, which bottlenecks badly from mid-morning. Without a ticket, slots for the same day are often gone in summer.

Best (and worst) times to go

8 am in summer: cooler, calmer and before the coach groups.
Late afternoon outside summer: cruise passengers have usually returned to their ships, and the light on the Parthenon is golden.
Worst: 9 am to early afternoon, especially when several cruise ships are in Piraeus.
Heatwaves: the Ministry of Culture can close the site during the hottest hours, so a midday summer ticket is a gamble.
Season: spring (April to May) and autumn (late September to October) are the sweet spots.

Use the quieter entrance

There are two entrances. The main (west) entrance, near the Areopagus rock, is where most groups go. The south-east entrance, on Dionysiou Areopagitou near the Acropolis Museum and the Theatre of Dionysus, is usually calmer. It's a gentle uphill walk past the theatres to the top.

Insider tips that actually save time

Wear shoes with grip. The ancient marble paths are polished smooth and slippery.
Bring water and a hat. There's almost no shade at the top.
Do the museum after the hill, when the midday heat makes the air-conditioned galleries a relief.
Small bags only. Large bags aren't allowed onto the site.
