How does entry work at Park Güell?

Park Güell has two parts. The wooded park around the edge is free. The famous bit, with the mosaic serpent bench, the dragon staircase and the gingerbread-style gatehouses, is the Monumental Zone, and that needs a timed ticket.

Visitors are let in by 30-minute time slot with a cap on numbers per hour. In peak season the popular slots sell out well ahead, and you can't count on buying at the gate. So the real line-skipping move is simply booking early and turning up on time.

Don't be late

Your ticket is for a specific half-hour window. Arrive about 10 minutes before it. Turn up well after your slot and you may not be let in.

Best (and worst) times to go

First slot of the morning (9:30-11 am): before the tour groups arrive, with softer light for photos of the mosaics.
Late afternoon: the last slots are also calmer, and the views over Barcelona are lovely as the sun drops.
Worst: 12 pm to 4 pm, when the terrace and the serpent bench are packed.
Day of the week: Tuesday to Thursday is lighter than weekends.
Season: April to October is peak. Winter is quieter, but the park closes earlier (around 5:30-6 pm).

Getting there without the climb

Insider tips that actually save time

Book the Sagrada Família and Park Güell on different days, or leave plenty of travel time. They're on opposite sides of the Gràcia district.
Head for the serpent bench first if you want photos without crowds, then do the dragon staircase on the way out.
Explore the free woodland before or after your slot, not during it, so you don't waste your time in the Monumental Zone.
Bring water and sun protection. There's little shade on the main terrace.
