Nikkō Tōshō-gū Crowds, Tickets and What to See
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
Nikkō Tōshō-gū costs ¥1,600 for adults (¥550 children), with the museum extra. It opens at 9 am (closing 5 pm from April to October, 4 pm from November to March). Tour buses arrive from about 10 am, so be at the gate by 8:45 am. Don't miss the Yōmeimon gate, the Three Wise Monkeys, the Sleeping Cat and the 207 steps up to Tokugawa Ieyasu's tomb. In autumn, leave early: roads to Lake Chūzenji jam badly.

Tōshō-gū is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, and one of Japan's most lavishly decorated shrines, part of the Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most visitors arrive on day trips from Tokyo, so the shrine is quiet at opening and busy from mid-morning, when tour groups bunch up at the Yōmeimon gate and the Sleeping Cat.

What to see, in order
- The five-storey pagoda by the entrance.
- The Sacred Stable with the carving of the Three Wise Monkeys (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil).
- The Yōmeimon gate, covered in over 500 carvings, restored in 2017. It's said you could gaze at it all day.
- The Karamon gate and main hall. Shoes off inside, and no photos.
- The Sleeping Cat (Nemuri-neko), a small carving over the passage to the inner shrine.
- The 207 stone steps up through cedars to Ieyasu's tomb (Okumiya).
- The Yakushidō with the "crying dragon" ceiling, if open.
Don't miss the cat
The Sleeping Cat is small and easy to miss. Look up above the gateway on the right side of the main hall, where the path to the tomb begins.
