Universal Studios Japan Crowds, Express Pass and Super Nintendo World Entry: How to Skip the Lines
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 8 min read
Quick answer
USJ tickets are dated and, priced by demand from ¥8,400, so buy early and online only (there's no ticket booth at the park). The only paid way to skip queues is a Universal Express Pass (about ¥6,800-¥23,800), which sells out on busy days. Super Nintendo World needs a free Area Timed Entry Ticket from the app on crowded days, and those can run out by 9:15-11 am. Arrive 6:30-7 am, as the park often opens 30-45 minutes early.

How busy is Universal Studios Japan?
USJ is one of the most visited theme parks in Asia, and since Super Nintendo World opened in 2021 (and Donkey Kong Country in 2024), crowds have grown. Most visitors are Japanese, so crowd levels follow the Japanese school calendar, weekends and events. On busy days, headline rides have 90-180 minute waits and Nintendo World entry can be gone by mid-morning.

Express Pass: which one to buy (and is it worth it?)
Universal Express Pass is the only paid way to skip the standby queue. Each one covers a set list of rides, mostly with a fixed return time for the big ones. They're sold in bundles, usually Express Pass 4 or Express Pass 7, with several versions that include different rides.

Worth it on weekends, school holidays and if you have only one day.
Not worth it on a quiet weekday in January, February or June, when early arrival and single rider lines are enough.
Super Nintendo World entry explained
On crowded days, entry to Super Nintendo World (Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country) needs an Area Timed Entry Ticket. These are issued only through the official app.
Before your visit: download the USJ app and register everyone's Studio Pass QR codes.
On the day: enter the park. The app only lets you get a ticket once your group's tickets have been scanned at the gate.
Immediately get the Area Timed Entry Ticket in the app and choose a one-hour window.
If they've run out: a lottery opens in the app. You can keep trying through the day.
Return at your time and scan in at the Nintendo World entrance.

🔑 The free skip-the-line hack
Our hourly forecast for USJ shows how busy each hour is expected to be on your date.
Arrive 6:30-7 am on busy days. The park often opens 30-45 minutes before the official time, and the bag check slows entry.
Get your Nintendo World ticket in the app as soon as you scan in.
Ride one big headliner while queues are short: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Hollywood Dream, or head to Nintendo World if your slot is early.
Use single rider lines for coasters through the late morning.
Eat at 11 am or after 2 pm, as lunch queues are long.
Evenings: queues drop on rides like The Flying Dinosaur, and Hogwarts castle is lit up.
Lockers for coasters
Some rides, such as The Flying Dinosaur and Hollywood Dream, require you to store bags and loose items in lockers at the ride. Keep a small bag and avoid rides back to back if the locker queues are long.
Plans by visitor type
Nintendo fans
Buy an Express Pass that includes Mario Kart, or arrive by 7 am and get your timed ticket the moment you enter. Allow 2-3 hours in the area.
Harry Potter fans
Go to the Wizarding World early or late. Forbidden Journey has a single rider line. Butterbeer queues are shortest in the morning.
Families with young children
Universal Wonderland has rides for small kids and a family reservation system. Check height limits, as many headline rides have them.
Thrill seekers
The Flying Dinosaur, Hollywood Dream (and its backward version, on some days) and Harry Potter. Use single rider and the evening.
