Hakone Shrine: How to Beat the Torii Photo Queue
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
Hakone Shrine is free and its grounds are open around the clock, but the famous Torii of Peace on Lake Ashi has a photo queue of 30-90 minutes at busy times. Arrive before 8 am, when there's little or no queue and often mist on the lake, or come late in the afternoon. You can also see the torii from the water on a rowing or pedal boat, or from the pirate ship. Weekends, holidays, and spring and autumn are busiest.

Hakone Shrine, founded in 757, sits in cedar forest on the shore of Lake Ashi. The shrine itself is rarely crowded, but the Torii of Peace (Heiwa no Torii), a red gate standing in the lake, has become one of Japan's most photographed spots. Visitors queue to stand in the gate for a photo, one group at a time.

- Arrive before 8 am. Stay the night in Hakone or Moto-Hakone to make it easy.
- Skip the queue entirely: take your photo of the torii from the side of the lakeshore path, without standing in it.
- See it from the water: rent a rowing or swan boat at Moto-Hakone, or watch from the pirate ship deck.
- Go late afternoon on a weekday.
The queue is only for standing in the gate
Photos of the torii itself, from the shore or a boat, need no queue at all.
What to see
- The lakeside torii at Moto-Hakone and the long approach through cedars.
- The main hall, up a stone staircase in the forest.
- Kuzuryū Shrine (Shingū), with a nine-headed dragon deity, beside the main hall.
- The Torii of Peace, down the steps to the lake.
- The Treasure Hall (small fee).
Best (and worst) times to go
- Before 8 am for no queue and mist on the lake.
- Winter mornings for Mount Fuji views across the lake.
- Worst: midday at weekends and in autumn.
Fitting it into the Hakone loop
The classic loop runs Hakone-Yumoto → Tozan train → Gōra → cable car → ropeway over Ōwakudani → Lake Ashi pirate ship → Moto-Hakone, with buses back. Most people reach Hakone Shrine in the afternoon, when the queue is longest.
Do the loop in reverse
Take the bus from Hakone-Yumoto to Moto-Hakone first thing, see the shrine early, then take the boat and ropeway against the flow of crowds. Lake Ashi guide.
Plans by visitor type
Photographers
Dawn mist on the lake, and Mount Fuji behind the torii from the lakeside towards Moto-Hakone on clear winter mornings.
Families
The steps to the main hall and the lake are steep but short. Swan boats are fun for kids.
Limited mobility
There are many stone steps. The lakeside path to the torii is easier from the Moto-Hakone side.
Mistakes to avoid
- Joining an hour-long queue when a side-on photo is free.
- Arriving at 2 pm on a Saturday.
- Doing the Hakone loop in the usual direction and arriving with everyone else.
