Hakone›Guides›Owakudani›Skip-the-line guide Ōwakudani: Ropeway, Black Eggs, Gas Closures and When to Go
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 3 min read
Quick answer
Ōwakudani, Hakone's steaming volcanic valley, is free, and most people reach it on the Hakone Ropeway (about ¥2,000 one way, covered by the Hakone Free Pass). Go early in the morning, before the ropeway queues at Sōunzan build, for the clearest Mount Fuji views. The ropeway has planned maintenance closures, usually in winter, with replacement buses, so check before you go. The area also closes when volcanic gas levels are high.

Ōwakudani ("great boiling valley") was formed by an eruption of Mount Hakone around 3,000 years ago, and sulphur vents still steam across the slopes. It's the busiest stop on the Hakone loop, and the bottleneck is the ropeway: at Sōunzan station, queues can exceed 30-60 minutes from late morning at weekends.

Check the status on the day
The ropeway can stop with little notice for wind or volcanic gas. Check the Hakone Ropeway site or Hakone Navi in the morning before setting out.
What to do at Ōwakudani
- Black eggs (kuro-tamago): eggs boiled in the hot springs turn black from the sulphur. Each one is said to add seven years to your life. They're sold in bags at the shop.
- Mount Fuji view: on clear days, especially in the morning and in winter.
- Ōwakudani Geo Museum on the volcanic history.
- Shops and the restaurant with views of the valley.
Best (and worst) times to go
- Early morning for short queues and Fuji.
- Winter, for clear air, but check the maintenance closures.
- Worst: late morning to early afternoon at weekends.
Beat the crowds on the Hakone loop
Most visitors start at Hakone-Yumoto, ride the train and cable car to Sōunzan, and queue there for the ropeway in late morning.
- Reverse the loop: bus from Hakone-Yumoto to Moto-Hakone, boat to Tōgendai, then the ropeway up to Ōwakudani from the quieter end.
- Or start very early from Gōra, reaching Sōunzan before 9:30 am.
- Stay overnight in Gōra or Sengokuhara for an early ropeway.
Health and safety
The volcanic gas contains hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide. People with asthma, bronchitis or heart conditions, pregnant women and young children are advised not to visit or to stay only briefly. The area is closed when gas levels rise.
Mistakes to avoid
- Arriving at Sōunzan at 11 am on a Saturday.
- Not checking for ropeway closures or gas warnings.
- Visiting with breathing problems.
- Planning the loop during the December and January to February maintenance periods without checking the replacement buses.
