How to Beat the Crowds at the Süleymaniye Mosque
The Süleymaniye Mosque is free and much calmer than the Blue Mosque. It closes to visitors for about 30 minutes around each prayer, and on Fridays until early afternoon, so check prayer times on the day. Go mid-morning between prayers on a weekday, dressed with shoulders and knees covered (women cover their hair), and don't miss the terrace view over the Golden Horn.

How busy is the Süleymaniye Mosque?
Built by the great architect Mimar Sinan for Süleyman the Magnificent, Süleymaniye is often called Istanbul's finest mosque. It's on a hill away from the Sultanahmet crowds, so it's usually far calmer than the Blue Mosque. The only waits are when visitors gather for the doors to reopen after a prayer.
