How to Beat the Line at Monas, Jakarta

Arrive right at opening, bring a JakCard or Bank Jakarta card (cash isn't accepted), and avoid weekends and public holidays. How long is the line at Monas?
The square around Monas is free and huge. The queue is for the summit observation deck, 115 metres up. The lift carries only about a dozen people at a time, so the line moves slowly, and the summit has a daily cap: on busy days, you only find out at the counter whether tickets are still available. Holiday crowds can be enormous: Monas recorded massive turnouts over the New Year break.
