How busy is the 21st Century Museum?
The circular glass museum, designed by SANAA, is Kanazawa's most popular sight after Kenroku-en. The free areas are usually calm, but the Swimming Pool draws queues, and on weekends, timed slots for going underneath can be gone by late morning.
About the museum and the Swimming Pool
Designed by SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), the museum opened in 2004 as a round glass building with no front or back, open to the city on all sides. Its most famous work, The Swimming Pool by Leandro Erlich, looks like a real pool from above, but a thin layer of water over glass hides a room underneath, where visitors appear to stand underwater.
Other permanent works include James Turrell's Blue Planet Sky, an open-roofed room framing the sky, and colourful installations on the lawn outside.
