Higashi Chaya is a few short streets of wooden teahouses with latticed fronts, so it fills up fast: at midday, the main street is crowded with visitors, many in rented kimono. Early mornings and evenings are completely different.
About Higashi Chaya
Higashi Chaya ("east teahouse district") was established in 1820 as one of Kanazawa's three geisha districts. The two-storey wooden buildings have fine latticed fronts called kimusuko, and the upper floors were where geiko entertained guests with music and dance. Some teahouses still operate today, and in the evenings, you might hear shamisen music from behind the screens.
The district is small, about 130 m along its main street, with side lanes and the Asano River just to the west. Kanazawa's other teahouse districts, Kazuemachi and Nishi Chaya, are much quieter.
