How busy is the Chureito Pagoda?
The five-storey pagoda with Mount Fuji behind it, framed by cherry blossoms or autumn leaves, is one of Japan's most famous images. The pagoda was built in 1963 as a peace memorial. Its small viewing deck, above the pagoda, is the bottleneck: on busy days, people queue for a spot at the railing.

The park's cherry trees usually bloom in mid-April, about two weeks after Tokyo. The Arakurayama Sengen Park cherry blossom festival was cancelled, as the city cited overtourism and its impact on residents, but the park stayed open, with guards controlling traffic. Waits of 1-3 hours for the viewpoint were reported at peak.
Cherry blossom strategy
Arrive before sunrise on a weekday. By 8 am, the queue is already growing.
