How to Get Ghibli Museum Tickets (and What to Expect Inside): Guide
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 5 min read
Quick answer
Ghibli Museum tickets are only sold in advance, never at the museum. They go on sale on Lawson Ticket at 10 am Japan time on the 10th of each month for the whole of the next month, and weekend and holiday slots go within minutes. Adults pay ¥1,000. Pick an entry time (10 am to 4 pm, on the hour), then stay as long as you like. If it's sold out, the only other route is a Sunrise Tours (JTB) bus tour that includes the museum. It's closed on Tuesdays and for maintenance periods.

Why Ghibli Museum tickets are so hard to get
The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, designed by Hayao Miyazaki, deliberately limits visitors so it never feels crowded. That's great once you're in, but it means tickets for a whole month are released at once, and popular days sell out almost immediately. There are no walk-ups, no same-day sales and no queue to join at the door.
Once you're inside, there's no time limit, so the museum is pleasantly calm compared with most Tokyo attractions. The busy points are the Saturn Theater queue, the Catbus room and the Straw Hat Café.
🔑 The free skip-the-line hack
Before you go, check how busy the Ghibli Museum area is likely to be. BeatTheCrowd shows the live crowd level and an hourly forecast for any date.
The museum doesn't allow tickets bought for resale. Third-party "Ghibli Museum tickets" at several times the price are risky and may be refused at the gate. Stick to Lawson Ticket or the official JTB tour.
How to buy Ghibli Museum tickets, step by step
Work out the release date. Tickets for any date in a month go on sale at 10 am JST on the 10th of the previous month. For example, all of December's tickets go on sale on 10 November.
Convert the time. 10 am JST is 1 am in London (in winter), 9 pm the night before in New York, and 12 pm in Sydney.
Prepare the night before. Open the Lawson Ticket English booking page from the official museum site, create any account needed, and have your card ready.
Pick two or three back-up dates and times. Weekdays and earlier slots are the easiest to get.
Be on the page before 10 am JST, and refresh at 10:00. The site can be slow at release time. Don't give up if it freezes.
Book the whole group in one order, with the lead name matching the ID you'll carry. Bring your passport on the day.
Weekdays are far easier
Weekend and Japanese holiday slots go first. A Wednesday or Thursday at 11 am or 2 pm is often still available hours after release.
If it's sold out
Check Lawson Ticket again over the following days: cancellations sometimes appear.
What to expect inside
The museum encourages you to wander with no set route. Here are the highlights.
Saturn Theater
Your ticket includes a short Ghibli film (about 15 minutes), shown only at the museum. Films rotate, so you may see a different one on a repeat visit. Queue times vary, so check the next showing when you enter.
Where a Film is Born
Rooms recreating Miyazaki's studio, with sketches, books and paints. Easy to spend a long time here.
Catbus room
A fluffy, life-size Catbus that children (under 12) can climb on.
The rooftop garden
Home of the Robot Soldier from Castle in the Sky. You can take photos here, and on the outside of the building.
Straw Hat Café and Mamma Aiuto! shop
The café has queues on weekends, so eat early or late. The shop sells museum-only goods. Leave it until the end.
No photos inside
Photography isn't allowed in the exhibits, and staff enforce it. You can take photos outside, on the rooftop and at the entrance.
Best time to go
Weekday slots, especially Wednesday and Thursday (it's closed on Tuesdays).
Earlier entry times (10 or 11 am) give you the most time inside.
Avoid Japanese school holidays, Golden Week and late December, when every slot sells out.
Spring and autumn are lovely for the walk through Inokashira Park.

Is the Ghibli Museum worth it?
For Ghibli fans, absolutely. It's small but full of detail, and the exclusive short film is a highlight. For casual fans, Ghibli Park or a Ghibli shop in Tokyo may be enough.
How we research: every guide is written by the BeatTheCrowd team from official sources and recent traveller reports, cross-checked against each other, and dated so you know how fresh it is. Book a JTB Sunrise Tours bus tour that includes the museum. It costs more and sets your time, but includes guaranteed entry.
Visit Ghibli Park in Aichi instead, which has a different booking system. Ghibli Park guide.
See Ghibli outside the museum: the Totoro statue at the museum's ticket booth is outside the gate, and nearby Kichijōji has Ghibli shops.
