How busy is Shibuya Sky?
Shibuya Sky is Tokyo's most popular observation deck: an open-air rooftop 229 m above the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, with views of Tokyo Tower, Skytree and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. Entry is by timed ticket, so the number of people on the roof is controlled, but the slots around sunset are packed, and the famous Sky Edge corner has a queue for photos.

How to book a sunset slot
- Check the sunset time for your date. Your slot should start about 60 minutes before sunset.
- Book exactly two weeks ahead. Tickets are released about 14 days before the visit date, and sunset slots go first.
- Try the official site first, then Klook. Some foreign cards are rejected on the official site, and Klook has its own allocation and free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
Skip-the-line: what actually works
There's no separate fast-track ticket. The online ticket is your skip-the-line pass: online ticket holders use a separate queue on the 14th floor, while the counter queue can be long at busy times. Arrive about 10-15 minutes before your slot, as entry is strict about times.
There's no time limit
Once you're in, you can stay until closing. A 5 pm slot on a winter day lets you see daylight, sunset and night views on one ticket.
Best (and worst) times to go
- Clear winter days (December to February): the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji, especially in the morning.
- Sunset: spectacular but crowded. Book early.
- After dark: great city lights, and easier to get tickets.
- Worst: rainy or windy days, when the rooftop closes, and hazy summer afternoons.
What happens inside, step by step
1. 14th floor: Sky Gate
Take the lifts from the Shibuya Scramble Square entrance to the 14th floor. Scan your ticket (online queue) or buy at the counter.
2. Sky Gate transition
A lift with a light show takes you up to the 45th floor, then an escalator to the 46th.
3. 46th floor: lockers
Put everything except your phone and a strapped camera in the lockers (a ¥100 coin, returned). Hats, bags, food, drink, tripods and selfie sticks aren't allowed on the roof.
4. Sky Stage rooftop
Take the escalator up to the open-air roof. Highlights include the Sky Edge corner, with a view straight down to the Scramble Crossing (queue for a photo, or pay for the official photographer), the hammocks and the Geo Compass.
5. Sky Gallery (46th floor)
The indoor floor has floor-to-ceiling windows, a café-bar and a gift shop, and stays open when the roof closes.
Plans by visitor type
Photographers
- A strap is required for cameras on the roof.
- Tripods aren't allowed, so bring a fast lens for night shots.
- Shoot through the glass on the Sky Edge for the crossing, and from the north-west corner for Fuji.
Families
Children's tickets are only sold at the counter on the day. On busy days, that means adults should book online and buy kids' tickets on arrival, which is a risk at sunset.
On a budget
A slot before 3 pm saves ¥700 per adult. Or see the free view from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. TMG observation deck guide.
Getting there
Shibuya Sky is in Shibuya Scramble Square, directly connected to Shibuya Station (JR, Ginza, Hanzōmon and Fukutoshin lines, and Tōkyū and Keiō lines). Follow signs for the Scramble Square exit and the Shibuya Sky lifts to the 14th floor.
Large luggage isn't allowed. Use the coin lockers in Shibuya Station.
Mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until a few days before to book a sunset slot.
- Assuming you can buy sunset tickets at the counter.
- Booking a slot that starts at sunset rather than an hour before.
- Bringing a big bag or suitcase.
- Going on a windy or rainy day without a flexible ticket.
