How busy is the Harry Potter Studio Tour Tokyo?
Opened in 2023 on the site of the old Toshimaen amusement park, it's the largest indoor Harry Potter attraction in the world. Timed entry controls numbers, but the experience gets busier through the day as groups build up inside, and the queues for the broomstick ride, butterbeer and the Great Hall photos grow from late morning.
Tickets and prices
- Book on the official site, or authorised sellers like Klook or Tiqets, as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Choose the earliest entry for shorter queues inside.
- Have your ticket on your phone to scan at the entrance.
- Arrive 20-30 minutes before your slot. Late arrivals aren't guaranteed entry.
The route: what you'll see, in order
1. Introduction and the Great Hall
A short introduction (in Japanese with English subtitles) ends with the doors opening into the Great Hall. After that, you explore at your own pace.
2. Hogwarts interiors
The Marble Staircase with moving portraits, the Gryffindor common room, Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts classrooms, Dumbledore's office and costumes and props.
3. The Forbidden Forest and Hagrid's Hut
A dark, atmospheric forest set with creatures and the Creature Shop.
4. The Ministry of Magic
A huge, full-scale set with its green-tiled atrium, one of the Tokyo tour's biggest highlights.
5. Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express
Walk along the platform and onto the train, with the luggage trolley photo spot.
6. The Backlot
Outdoors: the Hogwarts Bridge, Privet Drive, the Knight Bus and the Backlot Café with butterbeer. Bring an umbrella if rain is forecast.
7. Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts model and the shop
The cobbled shopping street, the detailed model of Hogwarts castle at the end, and the large Studio Shop, with Tokyo-exclusive merchandise.
Insider tips
- Do the broomstick ride early. Its queue grows all day, and photos cost extra.
- Have butterbeer at the Backlot, roughly halfway through. Lunch at the Food Hall before or after the tour sets.
- Look for the stamp spots and passport around the sets.
- Pace yourself: most people take 4-5 hours, and there's no rush.
- Travel light. There are lockers, but space is limited on busy days.
Plans by visitor type
Big fans
First slot, 5-6 hours, all the interactives and a meal package.
Families
The tour is walk-through with no rides, so it suits all ages. Strollers can be used inside. The broomstick ride is a favourite with kids.
Short on time
Allow at least 3 hours. Prioritise the Great Hall, Forbidden Forest, Ministry of Magic, Platform 9¾ and Diagon Alley.
Limited mobility
The tour is indoors and step-free for most of the route. Contact the venue for accessibility support.
Mistakes to avoid
- Turning up without a ticket.
- Booking a late afternoon slot and running out of time.
- Leaving the broomstick ride until the afternoon.
- Arriving late for your entry time.
- Expecting rides like a theme park: it's a walk-through studio tour.
Is it worth it?
For Harry Potter fans, yes, it's one of the best things to do in Tokyo. The sets are huge and detailed. If you've done the London tour, the Tokyo one is similar, with some sets and merchandise you won't see there.
