Arashiyama Bamboo Forest Crowds: When to Go for an Empty Path, and What to Pair It With
By the BeatTheCrowd team · Updated 21 October 2026 · 6 min read
Quick answer
The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is free and open 24 hours, and the main path is only about 500 m, so it fills up fast. Most visitors arrive between 9 am and 11:30 am, which means 7-8:30 am is quiet, and after 4 pm is the next-best window. Avoid 10 am to 4 pm, especially at weekends and in April and November. For a calmer route in, enter through Tenryū-ji's north gate (opens 8:30 am), and continue to Ōkōchi Sansō, where the crowds drop.

How busy is the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest?
The bamboo grove (Chikurin-no-michi) is one of the most photographed places in Japan, and one of the most crowded. It isn't a forest you can wander into: it's a fenced path through the bamboo, a few metres wide, so even a few hundred people make it feel packed. Rickshaws also use part of the route.
Most tour groups and day-trippers arrive mid-morning and leave by lunchtime, so the pattern is predictable.

No. The bamboo path is free and always open, with no tickets or skip-the-line options. The nearby gardens that charge entry are optional extras, and they're also the best way to escape the crowd.

Best (and worst) times to go
Sunrise to 8:30 am: the empty-path photos you've seen online. In November, photographers arrive at first light.
After 4 pm: the light is warm and the crowds thin.
Tuesday and Wednesday are much quieter than Saturday.
Overcast days give softer, more even light in the grove.
Worst: 10 am to 4 pm at weekends, and any day in mid to late November.
🔑 The free skip-the-line hack
Our hourly forecast for the bamboo forest shows how busy each hour is expected to be on your date.
9:30 am: leave through Tenryū-ji's north gate, straight into the grove, skipping the busy main entrance.
9:45 am: walk uphill to Ōkōchi Sansō, where the crowd drops off, and have matcha in the garden.
11:30 am: lunch on the main street. Yudōfu (tofu hot pot) is the local speciality.
Photography tips
Shoot upwards to show the height of the bamboo and leave people out of the frame.
Use the path as a leading line, and look for the curve near the Ōkōchi Sansō gate.
A wide lens (around 16-35 mm) and ISO 400-800 work without a tripod in the shade.
Tripods are impractical when it's busy and block the narrow path.
Blue hour just after sunset, and early mornings, give the best light.
Respect the fences: stepping into the bamboo damages it.
Plans by visitor type
Short on time
Walk the grove from the main entrance to the Ōkōchi Sansō gate and back: about 30 minutes.
Families
The path is flat and stroller-friendly in its main section, though crowded at midday. Kids enjoy the Arashiyama Monkey Park across the river. Monkey Park guide.
Limited mobility
The main section is mostly flat and paved, with a gentle slope towards Ōkōchi Sansō. Go early to avoid the crowds.
Rainy days
Rain thins the crowds noticeably, and the bamboo looks lush. Bring an umbrella, as there's no shelter.

Mistakes to avoid
Arriving at 10 am and expecting empty-path photos.
Turning back after the first 100 m, where it's busiest.
Entering from the main street, where crowds bunch up, instead of Tenryū-ji's north gate.
Visiting in mid-November without a dawn start.
Stepping over the fences for a photo.
Is the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest worth it?
Yes, if you time it right. At dawn, it's magical. At midday, many visitors are disappointed by the crowds and the short length. Either way, the rest of Arashiyama, from Tenryū-ji to the river and the temples of Sagano, makes the trip worthwhile.

Option C: afternoon
Come after 4 pm, walk the grove, then cross Togetsukyō Bridge at sunset. In December, stay for the Hanatōro lanterns.
Walk further
Most people walk the first stretch, take photos and turn back. The bamboo continues past the Nonomiya junction towards Ōkōchi Sansō and the quiet lanes of Sagano, with far fewer people.
