The Philosopher's Path is a free 2 km canal-side walk between Ginkaku-ji and the Nanzen-ji area. Walk it before 8 am, especially in late March to early April for the cherry blossoms or mid to late November for maples, when late mornings are shoulder to shoulder. Named after the philosopher Nishida Kitarō, who walked it daily, the path follows a narrow canal lined with around 400 cherry trees. Most of the year it's peaceful. In cherry blossom season, the narrow path becomes one of Kyoto's busiest spots.
