How busy is Tōfuku-ji?
For 11 months of the year, Tōfuku-ji is a peaceful Zen temple complex. In autumn, it becomes one of Kyoto's most crowded places, as visitors come to see the Sengyokukan valley of maples from the wooden Tsūtenkyō bridge. At peak, there's a queue to get onto the bridge, and the temple has restricted photography on the bridges in the past to keep people moving.

The free view
The Gaunkyō bridge, downstream, gives a free view of the Tsūtenkyō bridge and the valley. Photography there may be restricted at peak times to keep people moving.
What to see
1. Tsūtenkyō bridge
The covered wooden bridge over the valley, with views over a sea of red and orange maples in autumn.
2. Kaisandō and its gardens
Across the bridge, the founder's hall has a raked gravel garden and a moss chequerboard garden.
3. Hōjō gardens
Four gardens designed in 1939 by Shigemori Mirei, including the famous chequerboard moss garden on the north side. Beautiful year-round.
4. Sanmon gate
The oldest Zen main gate in Japan, a National Treasure.
Best (and worst) times to go

- Early November or early December for colour without the very peak crowds.
- May and June for green maples and empty paths.
- Worst: late November weekends.
Plans by visitor type
Autumn photographers
Be at the gate before 8:30 am, photograph the valley from the bridge first, then the Hōjō gardens.
Combine with Fushimi Inari
Tōfuku-ji is one stop from Inari on the JR Nara Line. Do Fushimi Inari at dawn, then Tōfuku-ji at 8:30 am. Fushimi Inari guide.
Limited mobility
The grounds are mostly flat, but the bridge and gardens have steps.
Getting there
Take the JR Nara Line (one stop from Kyoto Station) or the Keihan Line to Tōfukuji Station, then walk about 10 minutes.
Mistakes to avoid
- Arriving at noon on a November Saturday.
- Stopping to take photos in the middle of the bridge at peak times.
- Skipping the Hōjō gardens, which are quieter and just as beautiful.
- Going straight past it on the way to Fushimi Inari outside autumn.
