How busy is Ginkaku-ji?
Ginkaku-ji, officially Jishō-ji, was built in the 15th century as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Despite its name, the pavilion was never covered in silver. It's calmer than Kinkaku-ji, but the narrow paths and the sand garden get crowded from mid-morning, especially as it's the start of the Philosopher's Path walk.
The approach street from the Philosopher's Path to the gate (Ginkakuji-michi) is lined with shops and fills with people at the same time as the temple. At 8:30 am it's almost empty.

The temple raised its fees for the first time in 32 years, citing rising maintenance and staff costs. Older guides and some booking sites still list ¥500. There's no online booking or skip-the-line ticket, and you pay at the gate.
The route: what you'll see, in order
1. The hedge-lined approach
A tall camellia hedge lines the path from the gate to the ticket booth.
2. Ginshadan and Kōgetsudai (sand garden)
A sea of raked white sand and the Kōgetsudai, a flat-topped cone of sand about 1.8 m high, said to be for viewing the moon.
3. The Silver Pavilion (Kannon-den)
The two-storey pavilion overlooks the pond. You can't go inside, but the view across the garden is the classic shot.
4. Tōgu-dō and the moss garden
The path winds through a moss garden with dozens of moss varieties, small streams and a pond.
5. The hillside viewpoint
A short climb leads to a view over the pavilion, the sand garden and Kyoto beyond. Many visitors miss it, and it's the best view in the temple.
Don't skip the hill
The hillside path takes about 10 minutes, and it's usually quieter than the garden below.
Best (and worst) times to go
- 8:30 am on a weekday.
- After 3:30 pm, then walk the Philosopher's Path at sunset.
- Rainy days: the moss garden is at its best, and crowds are lighter.
- Worst: late morning in November and late March to early April.

Is Ginkaku-ji worth ¥1,000? Ginkaku-ji vs Kinkaku-ji
For garden lovers, yes: the sand garden, moss garden and hillside view are some of Kyoto's finest. If you only have time for one pavilion, Kinkaku-ji (¥500) is more dramatic, while Ginkaku-ji is calmer and more varied.
