How busy is Tenryū-ji?
Tenryū-ji, founded in 1339, is the head temple of one of Japan's major Rinzai Zen schools and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Sōgenchi pond garden, designed by Musō Soseki, uses the mountains of Arashiyama as a backdrop. Every Arashiyama tour stops here, so the veranda overlooking the pond fills from mid-morning.
Tenryū-ji is the anchor of Arashiyama. Its main gate faces the Randen station and the busy main street, so groups arrive here first, then walk out through the north gate into the bamboo grove. If you do it the other way round, grove first at dawn and Tenryū-ji at 8:30, you're always ahead of the crowd.

What to see
1. Sōgenchi pond garden
One of Kyoto's finest gardens, with a rock waterfall arrangement and the mountains as "borrowed scenery". Sit on the Ōhōjō veranda (building ticket) for the classic view.
2. The Cloud Dragon in the Hattō
A huge dragon painted on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall, which seems to follow you as you walk around.
3. Hyakkaen garden
The path behind the pond climbs through a garden of seasonal flowers to the north gate.
4. North gate to the bamboo grove
Leave through the north gate, and you're straight into the bamboo grove, skipping its busy main entrance.
